Manufacture and use of greenhouse gases are the largest environmental impacts of air conditioner use


The electricity produced to power air conditioning brings both global and personal health consequences. In burning fossil fuels like coal to supply electricity to homes and workplaces, power plants release clouds of soot and other pollutants into the environment, including mercury and carbon dioxide (CO2). Air conditioner use in the United States results in an average of about 100 million tons of CO2 emissions from power plants annually.

Ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which was used as cooling agents in the past have been substituted with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) which deplete 95 percent less ozone. However, increasing demand for air conditioners in hot climates like India and China has amplified the chemical's output in developing countries from 20 to 35 percent yearly, causing damage at an alarming rate and possibly setting back ozone recovery by 25 years. In industrial countries, HCFCs are substituted with ozone-safe cooling agents and was banned in the United States in 2010. But HCFCs is allowed in developing countries through 2040, and since they're still cheaper to use than ozone-safe chemicals, production in developing countries has increased fivefold until 2010.

For conscientious disposal, federal law obliges that HCFCs be retrieved from air conditioners and other appliances before they are dismantled for recycling or tossed in landfills, and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is authorized to impose fines of up to $25,000 for failure to conform with regulations.

In the midst of scorching heat waves, air conditioning serves as a lifesaver, defending against heat stroke and hyrthermia. However, without suitable maintenance, air conditioners can also be a health hazard. Dirty filters can allow allergens, pesticides and other particulate matter to go into one’s home from the outside, posing threats to indoor air quality. Exposure to these pollutants can trigger a host of health problems, including allergies and asthma and eye, nose and throat irritation.

Importance of ducts


Duct leakage causes not to produce enough cold air which can sap 20 to 40% of the energy out of even a well-operating air conditioner, if the ducts pass outside the cooled space (attics, crawlspaces and garages). Ventilation


An ideal air conditioner should heat, cool, clean, ventilate, humidify and dehumidify as needed to provide health and comfort. The second most important objective of air conditioning is to provide ventilation.

Without sufficient ventilation, contaminants generated indoors can lead to health and comfort problems. It is recommended to have at least enough ventilation to exchange the air inside house once every four hours, depending on house design.

Older homes have the tendency to have leakier walls and leakier ducts and typically obtain sufficient ventilation through such leakage. These leakage and infiltration may not be the most energy efficient method to ventilation and is an opportunity for savings.

Most new homes and some existing homes are relatively tight.  Hence, they need mechanical ventilation to meet minimum ventilation requirements.

Heat versus humidity


Humidity control was the problem that originally stimulates the need for air conditioning. Lack of humidity control in hot, humid climates can lead to mold growth and other moisture-related problems. High indoor humidity can cause health and comfort problems.

Modern air conditioners dehumidify as they cool which can be seen on the water that drains away, but this dehumidification is incidental to their main job of controlling temperature, which cannot separately control both temperature and humidity.

In hot, humid climates the incidental dehumidification that takes place may not always be enough to keep the indoor humidity conditions suitable. Professional recommends roughly a 60% relative humidity maximum at 78F.) The maximum dehumidification occurs not at the hot times of the year when the air conditioner is running a lot but at mild times of the year when the air conditioner runs very little.

Although there are some leading edge air conditioning systems that offers to independently control humidity, conventional systems may not be able to adequately control the problem and can cause discomfort or mold problems in particular conditions.
