From its first engine
to state-of the-art innovation, Cummins dedication to quality, community and reliability
endures and unchanged.
Clessie Lyle Cummins developed
his first steam engine at the age of 11 in rural Indiana. Keen and passionate
about engines, he left his family’s farm as a youngster and started working as a mechanic for his
sustainability.
In 1911, Ray Harroun, a
race car driver who heard of Cummins' prominence, asked him to join his pit
crew for a local auto race. Young Clessie formulated some recommendations to facilitate
increase speed, and that car won the first-ever Indianapolis 500.
In 1919, through the
support from banker William G. Irwin, Clessie Cummins founded the Cummins
Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana. Together, the two gentlemen developed a
company that was one of the first to take advantage of the groundbreaking
technology built by German engineer Rudolf Diesel in the late 1800s.
Within three years, the
company had gained its first profit; in three more, it offered the industry's
first 100,000-mile warranty.
Subsequently, several
years later Clessie Cummins’ passion for excellence and dependability,
shepherded by the visionary leadership of William Irwin’s great-nephew, J.
Irwin Miller, assisted Cummins Engine Company flourish speedily. J. Irwin
Miller turned out to be the general manager in 1934, and continued to run the
company to international fame over the next four decades. Within three years,
the company had gained its first profit; in three more, it offered the
industry’s first 100,000-mile warranty.
In 1954, Miller founded
the Cummins Foundation, and three years after offered the city of Columbus that
the foundation would remunerate all architect’s fees for new construction- leading
to buildings by leading architects globally gracing the streets of the
Midwestern city.
Beyond Cummins, Miller
was famous for his insight, wisdom, and humor among his contemporaries. In a 1968 profile, Esquire hypothesized on a
possible presidential bid, articulating “Is it too late for a man of honesty,
high purpose and intelligence to be elected president of the United States in
1968?”
In 1956, under Miller’s
leadership, the company had unlocked a manufacturing facility in Scotland. By
the 1960s, Cummins had penetrated 98 countries. This worldwide existence has
been the secret to ward progress; in the past three years, half of the
company’s sales have been from outside the United States. For example, Cummins has a headquarters in
Beijing, where the company is the largest foreign investor in China’s diesel
engine sector, with over 9,000 employees and $3 billion in sales.
